🏝️ End of Summer Guide: Links & Recs for Lizard Mode
I'm in Lanzarote with my family! This email comes to you from THE FUTURE
Today I’m running around my house shouting at different people about what needs to go in our suitcases.
We’re headed out for our first two week vacation … in our whole lives? At least in mine. We’ll be spending a week with our family in a village outside of Manchester and then heading off for the volcanic views of Lanzarote. I’m honestly not sure how I’ll handle all that time off 🫠
Anyway, August is the season of laying flat and moving as little as possible — so in an effort to be sure I’m not fussing around with a computer I’m sending you daydreams and peace for days spent in lizard mode in advance.

Y’all I get so hot at night. Like so hot that we had solar pannels installed so I could feel less guilty about cranking the AC down to 69. I’d been wanting to try linen sheets because I’d heard they’re nicer for the summer but the price tag is STEEP. Once the suposedly nice sheets I’d gotten from Lands’ End started to rip at the edges after two years, I finally bit the bullet and bought some of these on sale — Y’ALL. They are so good. The breathe better than cotton!
Sheets to keep cool even in a hot flash
I’m not from Appalachia, but I am absolutely from the South. My people have been in Georgia since the boat came over and I have always struggled with the way folks assume I’m a racist redneck when my accent comes out. Demon Copperhead is truly a classic — the plot doesn’t let up and the storytelling will bring you to your knees. I wept when I finished this book — it showed me my homeland in ways I’d never seen before and given the current political race, there’s real value in seeing through Kingslover’s eyes.

We call this “automatic salmon” because we make it every Tuesday night. It’s perfect for the soupy days and relentless heat of august. It’s a low, slow cook that makes a beautiful piece of fish with practically no effort and you can cover it with all those delicious fresh herbs that are in season right now.
My friend and reader
just came out with his second album and I had the pleasure of helping a little on his album bio. The album has the pacing of a slow walk in the woods and the light, playful lilt of a moonlit jump into a swimming hole. The pressing and the album art are also gorgeous, just saying.Dig Deep in the heart of Tennessee
I really can’t say what I like about this the most. I fell in love with Tanya Reynolds when she played Lily in Sex Education, and I am living for her irreverent take on a servant defying god and the ruling class to live her best life in the middle of the black plague. I can’t even decide who else I enjoy the most — Zoshia Mamet is an exceptionally irritating Pampinea, Amar Chadha-Patel is a wonderfully lusty but kind of idiotic doctor and Dougie Meekin’s Tindaro is the best kind of slapstick.
Even Homer Hated the Ruling Class
Agree about the sheets!
